Denture Fixatives
Denture fixatives can be purchased in three different
forms:- pastes liquids and powder. Complete dentures depend for
their retention upon being an excellent fit. Experience indicates
that however well a denture may fit there are many patients who
gain extra security and confidence from the use of a denture fixative.
The choice of a particular type depends very much on personal
preference. It is wise therefore to experiment and choose the
most effective product. Fixatives are particularly useful with
an immediate denture or after an addition has been made to a partial
denture, as the tissues shrink upon healing and the dentures will
become loose.
Stafford-Miller Products
Stafford-Miller denture fixative products have evolved
over time to third generation state of the art formulations that
are available today. Products have been meticulously researched
and developed to offer denture wearers stronger hold capable of
lasting all day and delivering increased bite force, as well as
providing all the other benefits of denture fixative usage.
Denture Fixative Creams
The choice of using a cream
or a powder is ultimately down to individual preference in terms
of product taste, texture and performance.
Cream fixatives become uniformly
distributed over the denture as they flow more readily than powders.
Creams absorb moisture from the mouth more slowly and therefore
they hold over a longer period of time. Creams provide an excellent
seal to prevent food particles form entering under the denture
and getting trapped causing possible pain or discomfort. The uniform
distribution that creams provide helps to reduce any effects of
localised areas of pressure. This ultimately makes denture wearing
more comfortable and minimises any tissue soreness.
Denture Fixative Powders
Denture powders start to hold more rapidly as they
absorb moisture faster. Applying powder to a wet denture further
ensures that the powder will adhere to the denture and provide
maximum hold. Powders may not hold over such a long period as
creams.
How do I know which product to use ?
If you are new to denture wearing or fixative usage
you may need to experiment with the different products to see
which one suits you best. Once you have found the right product
you need to determine how much fixative to apply. Avoid using
too much to ensure that the fixative remains within the fitting
surface of the denture. With a little perseverance you will soon
realise the benefits of using a denture fixative. If in doubt
consult your dentist.
